Charles Taninecz Sr. 89 of Cortland passed away at 2:55pm Friday April 3, 2009 at Briarfield Manor Nursing Home. Charles was born the son of the late Basil and Anna (Chrome) Taninecz on December 24, 1919 in Avella, Pennsylvania. A lifetime area resident, Charles was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church in Warren. He retired as a steel worker from Republic Steel in 1982 after more than 30 years of service. His most favorite past times were hunting, fishing, and gardening. Charles father passed away when he was a young boy and in order to help the family, Charles quit school in 8th grade and went to work in the mines. Charles served our country during the World War II era in the US Navy where he was honorable discharged as a Seaman First Class on December 14, 1945. Charles married his wife, Dorothy on May 8, 1948. Together they shared 43 years of marriage before preceding him in death on June 7, 1981. Charles is survived by his four children; Charles (Sondra) Taninecz Jr. of Hartford, Michael Taninecz of Newton Falls, Janice (Warren) Taninecz-Burton of Portland, Oregon; John Taninecz of Virginia; two brothers; Metro "Met" (Dolores) Taninecz of Seattle, Washington, Steve (Edith) Taninecz of Lordstown; grandchildren; Charles III, Kimberly, Rachael, Emily, Johnathan, Mandy, Holly, Michael Jr.; great grandchildren; John, Justin, Josh, Andrew, and Nia. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, wife Dorothy, siblings; John, George, Tom, Andy Taninecz, Mary Virtue, and Veronica Miller. A funeral mass will be held 11am Tuesday April 7, 2009 at Shafer-Winans Funeral Chapel in Cortland with Father Robert Karl officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Charles will be laid to rest at Hillside Cemetery in Cortland. The family has asked that material contributions be made in Charles memory to the Southern Care Hospice, 5401 Ashley Circle Ste. E, Austintown, Ohio 44515.
