Estelle C. Ackerman, age 94 of Howland Township, died Saturday morning, May 10, 2014, at Heritage Manor in Youngstown. She was born October 20, 1919 in New Castle, Pa. the daughter of the late Harry and Anna Sanes Cukerbaum. After high school, Estelle worked as an assistant sportswear buyer at Strouss-Hirschberg and Company in New Castle. She worked with her husband, Sam, as owners of the Maple Grove Market in Windham for 23 years, retiring in 1980. She volunteered for many years at Trumbull Memorial Hospital. Estelle had been an active member of Beth Israel Temple in Warren, the Warren Chapter of Hadassah and SCOPE. She was the oldest diabetic patient to receive insulin shot treatment and received a 75 year gold necklace from Eli Lilly Company to recognize that milestone. Her husband of 72 years, Samuel W. Ackerman, whom she married February 11, 1940 preceded her in death April 22, 2012. One sister, Sara Bull also preceded her in death. Estelle is survived by one daughter, Annette B. Ackerman of Mineral Ridge; three nieces, Andrea (Jerry) Whitehurst of Virginia Beach, Judith Lansat of Florida and Debbie Wright of Calif.; two nephews, Stanley Zoldan of Lordstown and Walter Zoldan of Florida and her sister-in-law, Dorothy Zoldan of Phoenix. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Roberts-Clark Chapel in Warren, where the family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service.
