Gordon L. Sayres of Niles passed away early Wednesday morning at his residence. He was born September 12, 1931 in Bath, IN a son of the late Orville and Bertha M. Wiley Sayres. He was a tool and die maker at General Motors since 1967, a US Army Veteran, and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Mineral Ridge. Gordon had been a former interim pastor for many Baptist churches, enjoyed square dancing, and loved spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife the former Denise Dunn Champion whom he married November 15, 2003; seven children Debra E. (Timothy) Sayres-Thomen of Albuquerque, NM, Bryan D. Sayres of Jeffersonville, IN, Denice L. Sayres of El Paso, TX, Cheri L. (Jim) Deptowicz of Ravenna, OH, Shelly (Doug) Sanford of Dixon, CA, Christy L. (Eric) Janus of Shalersville, OH, and Tricia R. (Nick) Sennyk of Niles, OH; two step children Thomas J. Champion of Englewood, FL and Tracy L. (Robert) Cox of Columbus, OH; one brother Virgil Sayres of Hamilton, OH; fifteen grandchildren; one great grandson; and his beloved cat Nicholas. Besides his parents, Gordon is preceded in death by three sisters and one brother. Friends may call from 5-8 Friday evening at the Lane Funeral Home Mineral Ridge Chapel, and from 10-11 Saturday morning at the First Presbyterian Church of Mineral Ridge where a funeral service will be held at 11 AM. Burial will take place in Vaughn Cemetery in Lake Milton. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 525 N. Broad St. Canfield, OH 44406 or to the church in Gordon’s name.
