Helen M. Russell, 94 of Howland passed away on Wednesday evening, April 13, 2016, at St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown. She was born March 19, 1922 in Johnstown, Pennsylvania the daughter of the late William and Pearl Gillin Moose. She was the second of five daughters, which were Lola, Helen, Mabel, Betty and Thelma. Helen was a 1940 graduate of Conemaugh High School, a suburb of Johnstown and then completed a secretarial course at Cambria Rowe Business College. She came to Warren during World War II to work in the war effort as one of the "Rosie the Riveters" at Mullens Manuafacturing, making artillery shells. Following the war she was employed at Trumbull Lamp and through her supervisor met her future husband, a returning Navy veteran, Glenn on a blind date. Her supervisor was Glenn's sister, Juanita. Helen married Glenn E. Russell on September 29, 1946 at the First Baptist Church in Warren and lived in Warren following their honeymoon in Niagara Falls. They had two sons, Jeffrey P. and Thomas W. Russell. Helen was the Cub Scout den mother for her sons and the other scouts. She was also a schoolroom mother during the boys' elementary school days. When her sons were both in school she started a part time job working in the Warren City Schools cafeterias and then became a lunchroom manager, retiring in 1967. In 1967, Helen moved to Florida with her family to start a new opportunity there but returned to Warren in 1973, where she has resided ever since. Helen enjoyed ceramics and tole painting in earlier years, but her great passion was cooking and preparing meals both at home and at the Frist Baptist Church of Warren, where she had served as a deaconess. She was a member there since her wedding and was the last surviving member of the church Fidelis Circle. In 2005, she and Glenn joined the Central Christian Church. She was a 50 year member of the Morning Light Chapter No. 80 Order of the Eastern Star, which she attended regularly when younger. She was survived by her husband, Glenn; son, Jeffrey P. Russell of Warren; three sisters, Mabel Partain of McDonald, Betty Moose of Johnstown, Pa. and Thelma Wilkinson of Hackettstown, NJ. Also, 11 nieces and nephews, David, Beverly, Barbara, John, Robert, Carol, Scott, Dennis, Paul, Jill and Sharon. One son, Thomas preceded her in death December 13, 1998; one sister, Lola Rorabaugh and three nieces, Judy, Deborah and Patricia also preceded in death. She has left behind many, many friends and touched everyone who knew her. She will be missed by all who knew her; she was feisty but loved by all. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 2016 at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Roberts-Clark Chapel in Warren and also one hour prior to the 6 p.m. funeral service on Monday at the Central Christian Church in Warren. Pastor Ty Sabella and Pastor James F. Baer will officiate. Eastern Star services will be held at the funeral home at 4:45 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be at Oakwood Cemetery in Warren. Memorial contributions may be made to the Central Christian Church memorial fund, 2051 E. Market St., Warren, OH 44483 or to the Warren Masonic Temple building fund, 112 Pine Ave. NE, Warren, OH 44481.
