John David Hake, age 67, of Cortland, died on Monday, August 22, 2011 at University Hospital in Cleveland. He was born on November 27, 1943 in Warren, a son of the late Robert Hake and the late Lucille Wingfield Hake. John graduated from Cortland High School in 1961. He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corp., having served from 1961 to 1966. He was retired from the Lordstown GM plant where he had worked as an inspector. John was a man who loved working with his hands and was a good friend to all. He enjoyed many hours on the golf course and never met a stranger. A week before his death, John won the 2011 Walnut Cup at Walnut Run Golf Course. John was also very proud of his hole-in-one at Tamer Win Golf Club in 2000. He will be missed by many friends and a family that loved him. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Payne Hake, whom he married on December 27, 1964; two daughters, Dana (Geoff) Light of Atlanta, GA and Denise (Scott) Coleman of Saline, MI, six beloved grandchildren, Mackenzie, Ethan and Hayden Light and Dallas, Logan and Hadley Coleman. Also surviving are his two sisters, Kay (Gerry) Payne of Cortland and Barbara (Larry) Chance of Arlington, TX. The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 10, 2011 from 3PM 5PM at the Shafer-Winans Funeral Chapel in Cortland. Funeral services will be at the funeral home on Saturday at 5PM with the Rev. Donald Barnes officiating and military honors will be rendered by the Trumbull County American Legion Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, material contributions can be made in memory of John Hake to the VA Medical Center, General Fund, 10701 E. Blvd., Cleveland, OH 44106.
