Joseph T. Bahmer

HOWLAND- Joseph T. Bahmer, 80, retired pharmacist, passed away early Thursday morning at the Hospice House in Poland, surrounded by his loving family.
Joe was born May 28, 1939 in Youngstown, to the late Joseph G. and Ethel (Baco) Bahmer. Growing up, he went to St. Joseph’s School in Youngstown, and began his athletic endeavors playing Little League for Lustig’s Shoes and Pony League for Beck Realtors. At 13 years old, he was a premier pitcher, throwing every pitch in the book. He went on to graduate from Ursuline High School in 1957 where he excelled in football, track, and basketball.
In 1964, he graduated from Ohio Northern University School of Pharmacy, where he was a member of Phi Mu Delta Fraternity.
Joe started his pharmacy career at Gray’s Drug in Youngstown and went on to own and operate Bahmer’s Howland Pharmacy in Howland for over 20 years. He was a member of the Eastern Ohio Pharmaceutical Association and served as president. He was awarded Preceptor of the Year by Ohio Northern in 1993 and then in turn was honored with National Preceptor of the Year by the National Association of Retail Druggists. He mentored many pharmacy students from various colleges throughout his career.
Joe was a longtime member of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Warren and for a while served as a lector.
He was an avid Ohio sports fan who loved to watch and cheer on the Indians, Cavs, Browns, and Buckeyes.
Joe especially loved to golf. He relished his time playing in the Wednesday evening league for ‘Mike’s Barbershop’ at the former Candywood Golf Course. He enjoyed rounds with his Sunday buddies and annual golf trips to Myrtle Beach and Florida with his son, Joe Jr., and friends. He also enjoyed playing in the Niles Knights of Columbus annual tournaments.
Joe treasured his beloved family and enjoyed family vacations and special times spent with his beautiful wife, children, and grandchildren.
Besides his parents, Joe is preceded in death by his brother John “Jack” Bahmer.
Joe is survived by his wife of 53 years, Betty Jean (Erdos) Bahmer, whom he married August 7, 1965; his children, Nadine Bahmer Johnson, Joe (Sue) Bahmer, and Becky (Jim) Kotwis. His beloved grandchildren, Claudia Johnson, William Johnson, Brittany Gerhardstein, Matthew Gerhardstein, Danielle Bahmer, Claire Kotwis, and Alaina Kotwis.
Friends may call Sunday 4-7PM at the Lane Funeral Homes Roberts-Clark Chapel, 180 Garfield Dr. NE in Warren. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10:00 AM Monday, June 17th at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, 3020 Reeves Rd. NE in Warren where friends and family will gather at 9:45 AM for Words of Remembrance. Entombment in All Souls Cemetery.
