A memorial service celebrating the Life of Richard "Rick" A. Markel will be held at 11 AM Tuesday at the Lane Family Funeral Home Austintown Chapel. Rick passed away Friday August 19 in Aultman Hospital in Canton. Rick was born July 11, 1971 in Youngstown, the son of Dick and Sandy (Murphy) Markel. He was a graduate of Jackson Milton High School class of 1989. Rick was a roofer with Boak and Son's Roofing. He was a member of the Saxon Club and had been a member of several travel soccer teams over the years. Rick excelled at soccer at an early age and had played for Ursuline High School. He was also a member of the Jr. Olympics Soccer Team and coached soccer for some time. Rick was the recipient of the 2016 Acts of Courage Award by the American Red Cross for his heroic act of saving a life in an auto accident in 2015. He was also recognized for his acts by both the Canfield Fire Department and the Governor of the State of Ohio. Besides his parents of North Jackson, Rick leaves a daughter Haley Markel of North Jackson, two sisters Stacie (Dr. Thomas) Markel-Clark of Prosper, TX and Amy (Jason) Galdun of Valley City, Ohio and three nieces, Mya, Audrey and Ava. Friends may call from 10 to 11 AM Tuesday at the Lane Family Funeral Homes Austintown Chapel where services will be held at 11 AM. The Markel family would like to sincerely thank Chris Denno for his lifesaving efforts to revive Rick, allowing his family the opportunity to be by his side.
