Steve Karchut, "Stefan", age 73 of Cortland, Ohio, died on Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at 3:40 PM at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation after a short illness. He was retired from Republic Steel/LTV/WCI in 2000 after 42 years of service as a millwright. He and his wife, Martha, owned and operated the chicken coop in Cortland for many years. Mr. Karchut was a member of STS Peter and Paul Byzantine Catholic Church in Warren, where in his youth he was an altar boy. He enjoyed boating, fishing, and brush hogging his acres of land with "Fergie", the 1952 Ferguson tractor that he loved. He was also a master flower gardener and was very creative and loved to tinker with things. Steve loved to vacation in warm weather, and when watching TV you could find him watching the Discovery, History, and A&E Channels. Also surviving are his siblings, Michael (Claudia) Karchut of Billings, MT, and MaryAnne Karchut of Champion; one nephew, William (Autumn)Crawford of California; two great-nieces and one great-nephew. He loved animals, and called Patricia's five dogs-his "granddogs"-Izzabella, Coco, Ginger, Jesse, and Sugar. Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his 14 year old Papillon dog, "Shelby", who died in 2013. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, April 1, 2014 at 11:00 AM at the Lane Family Funeral Home, Shafer-Winans Chapel in Cortland, where family and friends will be received from 10 AM until the time of the service.
