A. Robert “Bob” Steiskal passed away, Sunday evening, October 15,2023 at his residence. Bob was born May 15,1940, the son of the late Art Steiskal and Mildred (Call) Steiskal. He attended Ohio State University and graduated from Youngstown College in 1962. Thereafter, he went to Ohio Northern University where he graduated with a Juris Doctor degree in 1965. He is married to Mary Rose (Bero) Steiskal. They have a daughter, Erika Steiskal (Chris Adolph). He has two sons from his first marriage; Arthur Robert Steiskal, III (fiancé Lisa Cusano) and Jeffery M. Steiskal (Wendy). He has six grandchildren: Gavin and Madelyn “Maddy” Steiskal; Justin, Lindsey and Alaina Grace Steiskal, and Freya Rose Adolph.
While in high school, he worked for his father, played football, ran the mile in track and was a boy scout with Troop 84 in Austintown, he agreed to be the senior patrol leader for the Mahoning County Ohio contingent to the 1957 Jamboree in Valley Forge Pa. He earned his Eagle Scout award together with The Order of the Arrow.
After law school, he went into the Air Force as an officer where he was assigned to the Office of Special investigations (OSI) as an investigator. He conducted background investigations on persons requiring security clearances for their employment and criminal investigations of military. In December, 1967, he was assigned to Vietnamese language school in Washington D.C. for an intensive six-month course. He then went to Vietnam where he conducted intelligence operations with a network of local people and criminal investigations into military personnel. Due to his language skills, he was called upon by other military units to assist. As a result, he dealt with Korean, Australian and other countries’ forces. He was awarded a Bronze star for his service. When he returned from Viet Nam, he was transferred to Wurtsmith AFB in Michigan, where he was the commander of the detachment
After serving in the military, he returned to the area where he started a law practice with Attorney Bernard Wilkes in downtown Youngstown. He tried cases assigned to him and conducted pre-trial discovery and investigation. After 8 years with Attorney Wilkes, Attorney Steiskal went on his own as a solo practitioner. He engaged in all aspects of the practice of law -- trial, appeal, up to and including appearances before the 6th Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnati, Ohio, the Supreme Court of Ohio, and local 7th District and 11th District Courts of Appeals. He also did pro bono work for various organizations in the Austintown-Canfield area.
He became a trustee of The Ohio Academy of Trial Lawyers. Attorney Steiskal was also a 50-year member of the American Bar Association, Ohio State Bar Association, and Mahoning County and Trumbull County Bar Associations. He became involved in the Austintown Optimists Club where he served as President and Lieutenant Governor. Attorney Steiskal was also a member of Post 9571 of the VFW in Ellsworth. Ohio.
In the later 1980s, he became involved with his father’s business and focused on the growth of that business. From then until 2022, he practiced law full time and managed the various business interests he started with and, thereafter, had developed with his wife, Mary Rose, and son, Jeffrey.
Attorney Steiskal enjoyed travelling with his wife and family, including all 50 States, much of Canada, England and most of central and southern Europe, with an emphasis on Italy.
He continued to be involved with the remnants of his law school class of 1965 and friends he made through his model railroading, as well as trying to keep up with his growing family.
Everyone who knew him will miss his sense of humor. He had the ability to make people laugh. He treated his clients like family. It was truly a blessing to know him.
Friends may call on Friday, October 20th at Lane Funeral Home, 65 N. Broad Street, Canfield Chapel from 4:00 p.m. until 6:15 p.m., followed by a sharing of remembrances at 6:30 p.m.
