Barbara L. Balog

Calling hours will be 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Charles Borromeo Parish, 7345 Westview Drive, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 a.m. for Barbara Balog, 93 of Birmingham, Alabama, formerly of Boardman who died early Sunday morning at The Oaks on Parkwood Care Center. Barbara was born October 10, 1924, in Harrisburg, PA, a daughter of the late Dr. Harold F. Lanshe, M.D. and Elizabeth Taylor Lanshe and had lived in this area for many years before moving to Alabama in 2009. Barbara graduated from Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in Baltimore in 1945 and received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing Education from The Catholic University of America, Washington, DC in 1948. Barbara worked in various nursing capacities in the area from private duty, to staff nurse in intensive coronary. She received her Masters Degree in Education from Youngstown State University and was a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor. Barbara had volunteered for the American Red Cross, Daybreak Shelter for Adolescents and at the Community Crisis Line in Warren. Her husband, John A. Balog, a widower, whom she married August 20, 1955, died December 18, 2007. She leaves three daughters, Beth (Andy) Price of Birmingham, Alabama, Janet (George) Aliff of Boardman, Amy (Chad Kapfhamer) Balog of Atlanta, Georgia; one son, James Balog of Indianapolis, Indiana; five grandchildren, Kent Householder of Savannah, Georgia, Katie (Jason) Rebraca of Austintown, Emily Price and Matthew Price both of Birmingham and Adam Kapfhamer of Charlotte, North Carolina. Barbara also leaves a brother, John Taylor Lanshe of Akron; and two half-sisters, Michele (Ted) Dougher of New York and Jan (Lenny) Zemaitis of Colorado. Besides her parents and her husband, Barbara was preceded in death by her step-mother, Pauline Mckissick Lanshe; a step-daughter, Camilla Bell Balog; two brothers, Harold F. Lanshe, Jr., Daniel D. Lanshe; and a sister, Anne Wells. The family requests material tributes take the form of contributions to the International Retinal Research Foundation,1720 University Blvd., Birmingham, AL 35233.
