Carl "Gene" Dawson, 99, of Sebring, formerly of Canfield, passed away Friday evening, February 7, 2025, at Copeland Oaks, just shy of his 100th birthday.
Gene was born on March 3, 1925, in Youngstown, Ohio, a son of the late Wesley and Emma (Dietzel) Dawson. He was a lifelong resident of the area and a proud graduate of South High School, where he met his future wife, Nanette McMahan. They married on November 17, 1945, and enjoyed nearly 70 years of marriage before Nanette's passing on October 29, 2015.
Gene grew up on his family’s dairy farm in Canfield, where he worked and eventually managed the farm. Later, he went on to work at General Motors in Lordstown, from where he retired. Gene was an active member of the Canfield community, having been involved with the Canfield Rotary Club, the Ruritan Club, and volunteering at the Canfield Fair at the Sound Tower.
A lifelong sports fan, Gene enjoyed cheering on the Cleveland Browns, Cleveland Indians, and the Ohio State Buckeyes.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Janice C. and Rev. Jay Wolin of Sarasota, FL; his son, Richard C. Dawson of Dunnellen, FL; three grandchildren, Olivia, Will, and Kyle; and five great-grandchildren. Besides his parents and his wife, Gene was preceded in death by two brothers, Wesley Dawson and Donald Dawson.
