Youngstown- Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday at the Valier Methodist Church in Valier, PA for Carol Joanna Shaffer Mills of Youngstown who passed away on Monday after a long battle with cancer. Carol was born January 7, 1933 in Youngstown, the daughter of Frank and Myrtle Shaffer, both of Valier, PA. She graduated from South High School in 1950 and earned a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in History from Youngstown State University. She most recently served as an associate professor at Cuyahoga Community College in Cleveland. She was also an accomplished local actress, and her credits include: Tobacco Road, The Effect of Gamma Rays on Man in the Moon Marigolds and Look Homeward, Angel, all for which she won best actress awards at the Youngstown Playhouse. She also appeared off-Broadway in Marat Sade and Phaedra in addition to the Carousel Dinner Theater in Akron with the Kenley Players. Mrs. Mills is survived by two daughters: Deborah C. Lund of Canfield and Laura B. McGill of New York, as well as a son Kim Jonathan Mills of New York. She also leaves a sister Barbara Pilcher of Boardman, and a brother Thomas Shaffer of White Plains, MD. Mrs. Mills also leaves three granddaughters: Tara M. Rogers of Columbus, and Olivia G. and Molly F. McGill of New York. She was preceded in death by her parents, and a son Daniel Frank Mills. Friends may call at the Lane Funeral Home in Canfield on Thursday from 5-8 PM.
