Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, September 21 at the Lane Family Funeral Home, Canfield Chapel, 65 N. Broad St., for Charles Spencer Hill, 95, who died Monday night at Victoria House Assisted Living in Austintown where he had resided since May 2017. Chuck Hill was born in Youngstown on September 14, 1923, a son of the late Harold J. and Cleora G. (Farmer) Hill. He graduated from South High School in 1941 and entered the U.S. Army Air Force in February 1943. While state-side he attended Armorer school at MacDill Field, Florida and later was enrolled in the Army ASTP program at Randolph Macon College in Virginia. He served in the 586th B-26 Bomb Squadron, 397th Bomb Group, and was deployed to France in 1945 with the 1259th Combat Engineer Battalion, Weapons NCO. After the war Chuck enrolled for a year in an aeronautical engineering program at Cal Aero Tech Institute in California. Upon return to Youngstown he embarked upon a lifelong career in the heavy steel mill equipment manufacturing industry where he was involved with basic steel strip processing and served in the roles of purchasing agent, sales engineer and press estimator. He was employed by various companies including William B. Pollock, Snyder Bentley, McKay Machine, Herr Equipment in Warren, and E.W. Bliss Co. in Salem. Chuck was an avid flyer, having obtained his pilots license in 1949 and his commercial rating in 1951. He owned several airplanes while still a bachelor, including a Fairchild and Luscombe, and often flew out of Southern Airways in Boardman which was operated by the late Nick Parish. He was a member of the Western Reserve United Methodist Church, the Experimental Aircraft Association, the World War II Heritage Society, and the Canfield Historical Society. Chuck was married on November 10, 1956 to Dorothy Jane Allen, who passed away on April 10, 2015. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Barbara O. Hill Serian. He leaves his son, Attorney Thomas A. Hill, two nieces, Martha Serianni of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Paula (Steve) Wilson of Columbus, and nephew Dale (Mary) Serian of Columbus. The family would like to offer their thanks to the doctors who, with the Lords guidance, helped maintain Chucks quality of life during several years of CHF and related renal issues: Dr. Joseph Zeno and assistant, Theresa Carr, Dr. Allen Amorn and Dr. Jeffrey C. Halley. Thanks also to the wonderful staff at Victoria House in Austintown. Services will be officiated by Pastor Jeff Schoch, the son of Chuck and Dorothys good friends, the late Ron and Fran Schoch. Friends may call one hour prior to the services at the funeral home on Friday.
