Doris I. Merritt, 89

Doris I. Merritt, 89 of Youngstown passed away early Tuesday morning, June 18, 2019 at Hospice House of Poland. Doris was born August 9, 1929 in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Harry and Thelma McClain. She graduated from East High School and was a lifelong area resident. Doris was a member of Christ Church Presbyterian. She was a talented crocheter and quilter and was a member of several quilt guild organizations and had volunteered at the Canfield Fair Arts and Crafts display. She was a long time active member of the Ladies’ Oriental Shrine and also an honorary member of the Kentucky Colonels, but most important to Doris was her role as wife, mother and homemaker. She leaves her husband, Howard Merritt, Sr., whom she married May 13, 1950; a son Howard (Shirley) Merritt, Jr. of Canfield.; two daughters, Diane Sveth of Canfield, Nancy Martauz of Boardman; six grandchildren, Michael (Gretchen) Merritt of Canfield, Matthew (Jing) Merritt of Beijing, China, Megan Merritt of Cleveland, Anthony Sveth of Austintown, Tara (Jeff) Liebowitz of Brooklyn, NY, Lauren Martauz of Boardman; and six great-grandchildren, Riley Merritt, Haydyn Merritt, Matthew Merritt, Sophia Merritt and Audrey Liebowitz, and Aidan Merritt. Besides her parents, Doris was preceded in death by a son, James Merritt; a brother, Irvin McClain; a sister, Betty Lockhart; her in-laws, Wesley and Rose Merritt; son-in-law, Michael Martauz and a brother-in-law, Wesley Merritt. Friends may call on Friday from 4:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Anstrom Chapel, 8387 Tod Ave., Boardman followed by a funeral service at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be at Lake Park Cemetery.
