Dr. Artemio J. Dangaran

Artemio Juario Dangaran, 81, passed away at home on May 12 surrounded by his family. Tem was greatly loved and will be deeply missed by his wife Marjorie (MacDougall) Dangaran; son James; daughter Melissa and her husband Jaret Giesbrecht; daughter Michele; and daughter Kirsten and her husband Ben Campbell. He was a proud "Lolo" to his grandchildren Bishop and Miller. A caring and devoted husband and father, Artemio dedicated his life to the practice of medicine and healing others. In 1963, he graduated from the University of Santo Tomas and completed his first internship in the Philippines before travelling to Schenectady, NY for his second internship at St. Clares Hospital. Artemio came to Warren for the first time to complete his three-year residency at Trumbull Memorial Hospital before returning to Schenectady to be a house physician at Ellis Hospital and then St. Marys Hospital in Troy, NY. With his wife Marjorie and his growing family, Artemio settled in Warren in 1970 and opened his own private practice a few years later. Throughout his thirty-nine year career as a doctor, Artemio was a compassionate and sincere diagnostician with a singular focus on making his patients well. When patients came to see him, they knew they were on their way to feeling better when they heard Dr. Dangaran ask "So whats your problem?" Born in Dingle Iloilo, Philippines, to Federico and Marcelina Dangaran, Artemio grew up with his six brothers and nine cousins, the Daquilaneas. The families emphasized hard work and the importance of education, and have many shared memories including surviving the threat of Japanese soldiers during WWII, growing abaca and coffee on the farm in Nabunturan, or as boys, creating mischief in the neighborhood. Family was always of the utmost importance to Artemio, and he remained a dependable son, brother, and cousin no matter where his family lived - whether it was in the Philippines, Canada, or the US. His family and long-time friends, who called him "Ming" and "Pare", knew him for his free and easy laugh, excellent stock tips, love of fishing, preference for good scotch, kind heart, determination, and stubbornness. Artemio liked to tell jokes and cook good food. Shy, funny, independent, kind, smart, boisterous, generous, and loyal, Artemio was always a provider and protector for his family, and they thank him for the wonderful life he made for them. He was preceded in death by his parents, four of his brothers - Federico Jr., Andres, Narciso and Jesse - and his mother-in-law, Betty MacDougall, who was also his long-time office nurse. He is survived by his brothers, Leovigildo and Antonio Dangaran, who both reside in the Philippines. He was a supportive brother-in-law and good friend to Robert and Edward MacDougall who reside in Painesville, OH and Pittsburgh, PA, respectively. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, May 17, 5:00-8:00 PM, at the Lane Roberts-Clark Chapel, 180 Garfield Dr. in Warren, OH, with funeral services Friday, May 18, 11:00 AM.
