Memorial services will be held at 11:30am Thursday in the Lane Funeral Home Niles Chapel for Frank Bassett, Jr., 90, who died Sunday morning at Shepherd of the Valley Nursing Home in Niles. He was born August 22, 1919 in Niles, the son of Frank and Mabel (Tharp) Bassett, Sr., and he resided in this area all of his life. He was a 1937 graduate of Niles McKinley High School. He was also a veteran of the U.S. Army serving in the Pacific Theater during WW II. He worked for Strouss Department Store in downtown Youngstown as director of personnel for 45 years and he also helped to open the Eastwood mall store before retiring in 1985. He was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church in Niles. He was also a longtime member of the American Legion, William McKinley Post 106 in Niles; former President of the Warren Retail Merchants; and he served as chairman of the Niles Tornado Recovery effort. He was active in several other organizations as well and he enjoyed playing golf. He married the former Carolyn Whittaker February 11, 1942 and she preceded him in death October 13, 2007. He is survived by three children; Candyce Warnick of Naples, Fla., Richard M. (Cathy) Bassett of Niles, and William Jeffrey (Kelly) Bassett of Naperville, Illinois. He also leaves behind eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Besides his wife he was preceded in death by his parents and a son Robert M. Friends may call from 10:30-11:30am Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions be made to the American Legion Post 106, c/o Robert Matheny: 1025 Near St., Niles, OH 44446 or Shepherd of the Valley 1500 McKinley Ave., Niles, OH 44446 for staff appreciation.
