George Alfred Hughes, Jr., 72

George Alfred Hughes, Jr., 72 of Boardman died May 20th at Pebblecreek Healthcare Center after a long illness. George was born January 31, 1948 in Erie, PA, a son of the late George A. and Ruth (Welles) Hughes, Sr. and came to this area in 1975. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Mercyhurst College in Erie and was a vocal music teacher. George taught at The Rayen School for several years and then taught at Chaney High School from 1977 until 2008 when he retired. George was much loved by his students and received the Ohio Teacher of the Year Award from OMEA (Ohio Music Education Association) and was a Jennings Scholar. He leaves his wife, the former Patricia M. Penney, whom he married January 29, 1977; half brother, Owen Hughes of New York, and many nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, George was preceded in death by an infant sister, Bridgett. .
