Heidie C. Mitchell, 87 A Celebration of Life is being planned for a little date for Heidie C. Mitchell, 87 of Canfield who died early Monday morning at St. Marys Alzheimers Center. Heidie was born December 26, 1931 in San Diego, California, a daughter of the late Robert E. and Helen Ruth (Stout) Mitchell and came to Ohio in the early 60s. She received her Bachelors Degree in Health and Physical Education from Bowling Green State University in 1953, a Masters Degree in 1962 from Michigan State University and her Ph.D. in 1972 from The Ohio State University. Heidie was a Physical Education teacher at Brinkerhoff Elementary School in Mansfield Ohio from 1953-1955 and Director of Health Education from 1955-1959 at the YWCA in Mansfield. From 1962-1963 Heidie was a Graduate Assistant at Michigan State University where she was also the Intramural Director for East Lansing Jr. High School. While in Michigan she had a TV show, "For Health and Beauty with Heidie Mitchell" , a segment of the program called Copper Kettle. She was a Professor at Kent State University in the Health and Physical Education Department from 1961 -1981 In 1977, Heidie co-authored a college text book with Grace Figley and Barbara Wright, titled, "Elementary School Physical Education Methods: An Educational Experience." Heidie had an array of hobbies including gardening, making wine, salt water fishing, listening to classical music, painting and bird watching. She had also enjoyed restoring antique trunks. Over the years she had restored over 300 antique trunks for customers in 18 different states and was a self-professed "Trunk Doctor." Heidie leaves her longtime friend, Barbara Wright with whom she made her home; a brother Bruce (Nelwyn) Mitchell of Woodstock, Georgia; two sisters, Jodi (Bill) Codwise of Canton, Georgia , Debbie Mitchell of Pittsfield, Massachusetts and a cousin, Peggy Ferguson of Ormond Beach, Florida. Besides her parents, Heidie was preceded in death by her aunt and uncle Margaret (Phillip) Ferguson whom raised her and a cousin, Graham Ferguson. Arrangements have been entrusted to Lane Family Funeral Homes, Canfield Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family requests material tributes take the form of contributions to one of Heidies favorite charities, St. Marys Alzheimers Center, 1899 W. Garfield Rd., Columbiana, OH 44408; Buckeye Horse Park Association, P.O. Box 861, Canfield, OH 44406; or to Angels for Animals, 4750 W. South Range Rd., Canfield, OH 44406.
