Warren - Helen L. Shand, 95, passed away Friday, August 10, 2018 at Mercy Anderson Hospital in Cincinnati. Helen was born on April 16, 1923 in Warren, OH, a daughter of the late Dwight and Beatrice (Grove) Thompson. She was a lifelong seamstress and could make clothes, curtains, bedspreads, quilts, and more. She loved to go fishing with her husband and friends, kept a beautiful garden, and was a wonderful cook. Her specialties included fried fish, homemade noodles, soups, and pies of many kinds. She enjoyed traveling to see family and friends all over the U.S and Canada. She also enjoyed embroidery and was an avid reader, still reading three books a week at 95. She will be deeply missed by her children, Leonard Summerlin and Beatrice Muir; grandchildren, Paula Summerlin, Heather (Jeffery) Spanbauer, Brad (Lynnea) Muir, and Ryan (Magdalena) Muir; seven great-grandchildren who will miss her greatly; brother Donald Thompson; and sister Anna Catherine Yerkes. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Nathanial J. Shand, whom she married on July 23, 1950 and passed away on November 21, 2014; sisters, Araminta (Mitzi) Sager, Martha Redman, and Leah Clinefelter; and brothers, Dwight, Richard, and Charles Thompson. A graveside service will be held at Howland Township Cemetery on Saturday August 18, 2018 at 3:00PM. Funeral arrangements for Helen were entrusted with Lane Family Funeral Homes, Shafer-Winans Chapel in Cortland.
