Howard Eugene Hann

September 16, 1926 — June 10, 2017

Howard Eugene Hann, 90, of Austintown Twp., passed away Saturday, June 10, 2017 in St. Elizabeth Hospital Boardman Campus. Howard was born September 16, 1926 in Youngstown OH, the son of Charles D. and Lorina (Peters) Hann. He was a lifelong area resident and a graduate of Austintown Fitch High School. Howard served in the U.S. Army 1946-1947 at Ft. Lewis Olympia, WA and at Camp Kilmer Newark, NJ. In March 1986 Howard retired from the East Ohio Gas Company as District Foreman after 42 years of service. He was a member of New Middletown Farmers and Sportsmen Club, the NRA, and AARP. Through the example of his own work ethic Howard inspired others, lending a helping hand and teaching many skills such as construction, water skiing, and fishing. Howard built three homes where the family resided. He was an avid outdoorsman, in summer fishing Lake Erie from Port Clinton and Ashtabula and in autumn hunting rabbits and pheasants with his beagle hounds. Howard organized family fishing trips to Sekiu, Washington; Kenai River, Alaska; Lake Nipissing, Ontario; and Gueguen Lake, Quebec. Winters were spent absorbing Florida sunshine and fishing in Lake Pierce. Tomatoes and other vegetables grown by Howard were delicious. Howard's caring and love will be deeply missed by friends and family alike. He leaves his beloved wife of 67 years, the former Virginia Ruth Paugh, whom he married September 7, 1948, three children, Donald (Paula) Hann of Wasilla, AK, Gerald (Cindy) Hann of Buffalo Grove, IL, and Beverly Suffolk of Kent, seven grandchildren, Timothy Hann, Rebecca Somogye, Bradley Hann, Jason Hann, David Hann, James Suffolk, and Philip Hann, as well as five great grandchildren, Victoria, Lacey, and Grace Hann and Robert and Joseph Somogye, and foster brothers Norman and Harry Clay. Besides his parents, Howard was preceded in death by his three brothers, Clarence, Dallas, and Ernest Hann, and son-in-law James Suffolk. Friends may call from 1 to 3 PM Saturday June 17, 2017 at Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel where funeral services will be held at 3 PM. In lieu of flowers the family requests donation be made to battenhope.org in the name of Joseph Hann.
