James J. Elko, Sr.

James J. Elko, age 82, of Cortland passed away peacefully on July 8, 2024, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born on December 5, 1941, to the late Steven and Genevieve Len Elko. 

He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who enjoyed spending time and making memories with his family. He was a graduate of Warren G. Harding High School with the class of 1959. After high school he met the love of his life, Mary, in 1960 and later they were married in 1962. 

He served the community of Warren working as a Warren City Firefighter until his retirement as captain. He was a long-time member of the Cortland Moose Lodge where he enjoyed many good friends. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, he had a passion for boating and the water. He was an avid sports fan always watching the Browns, Buckeyes and Fighting Irish. One of his true passions was his garden, which he enjoyed working in and sharing the spoils of his labor. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law, Randy Rose, sisters, Mary, Helen, Kathy, Vicki, and brother, George. 

He is survived by his wife of 62 years Mary M. McGann Elko; children, Susan Rose, Lori Elko, and James (Amy Horvath) Elko, Jr; grandchildren, Dylan Rose, Melanie (Bailey) Weigel-Rose, and Cierra Kitts; brother, Joseph Elko and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members. 

Calling hours will be held 4:00 PM – 6:00 PM Sunday, July 14, 2024, at Lane Funeral Home, Roberts-Clark 180 Garfield Dr. NE Warren, OH 44483. A Panachida will be held at 9:30 AM Monday, July 15, 2024, at Lane Funeral Home. The funeral divine liturgy will be held 10:00 AM Monday July 15, 2024, at St. Peter and St. Paul Byzantine Catholic Church, 180 Belvedere Ave NE, Warren, OH 44483.
