James D. Koenig, 80, of Canfield, passed away Thursday afternoon, February 20, 2025, surrounded by family.. He was born on April 5, 1944, in Youngstown, a son of the late Walter and Hazel (Hinely) Koenig, and was a lifelong resident of the area. James graduated from Boardman High School and proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He worked for 30 years at the General Motors Lordstown Plant before retiring in 2000.
An avid fisherman, James enjoyed fishing Lake Erie in his younger years, and then many great times with the Cottage Crew at Lake Milton with his family. He looked forward to the yearly trips to Geneva on the Lake to see relatives, have porch conversations, see the sunsets, and of course the bar crawl! He also looked forward to trips to Mountaineer Casino and Hollywood Gaming, where he enjoyed watching the horse races. A dedicated Green Bay Packers fan, James took great pride in supporting his team. Youth sports was also a passion of his being a little league coach and lifetime board member at Canfield Baseball Club along with following his grandchildren’s journey at many of their events.
James was preceded in death by his wife, the former Patricia Schell, the love of his life, whom he married on July 15, 1967, and who passed away on May 19, 2019. He is survived by two sons, Michael (Maria Rotunno) Koenig of Boardman and Matthew (Susanne) Koenig of Youngstown, as well as three grandchildren: Mackenzie, Marina, and Cameron. In addition to his parents and wife, James was preceded in death by two older brothers, Walter and Robert Koenig.
Private services will be held for the family.
