JoAnn M. Smith

Mrs. JoAnn M. Smith, 86, of Canfield, died Thursday evening August 8th surrounded by her family at the Hospice House in Poland. 

She was born December 20, 1937 in Youngstown , a daughter of the late Stephen and Irene (Ewolhin) Pazel.

JoAnn was a 1955 graduate of Youngstown East High School and she worked for the Home Savings and Loan Co. in Youngstown for 30 years, retiring in 2001.

She married Earl H. Smith on February 15, 1958. They shared 66 years of marriage and many happy memories together. He survives her.

JoAnn was of the Roman Catholic faith and a former member of the Holy Name of Jesus Church on the West side of Youngstown. She enjoyed taking care of her home and flowers, and working in her yard. She also enjoyed traveling, having toured several European cities while her husband was serving in the Army. Her favorite holiday was Christmas and she loved to decorate her home for her family and friends.

Besides her husband, JoAnn is survived by two children; Dr. Arthur H. (Charisse) Smith, of Austintown and Marlana (Andrew) Opsitnik, of Grove City, OH. She also leaves behind five siblings; Frank Pazel and George (Colleen) Pazel, both of Youngstown, Shirley (Paul) Pesa, of Austintown, Marjorie Pazel, of Apache Junction, AZ, and Stephen (Loretta) Pazel, of Austintown; three grandsons, Alexander, Nathaniel, and Matthew; and two great granddaughters, Ava and Veda.

Besides her parents, JoAnn was preceded in death by two brothers, William and Stephen "Junior" Pazel.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, August 15th at the Lane Funeral Home Austintown Chapel, 5797 Mahoning Ave., Austintown. 

Friends may call one hour prior to services from 10-11 AM Thursday at the funeral home.

JoAnn will be laid to rest in the Calvary Cemetery in Youngstown.
