Prayers will be 9:15 A.M. Saturday at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Austintown Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, June 30th at St. Christine Parish, 3165 S. Schenley Ave., Youngstown for Retired U.S. Army Sgt. Major John B. Sledd, 65, of Austintown who died Thursday afternoon in San Antonio, Texas while traveling. John was born September 13, 1952 in Murray, Kentucky, a son of the late Johnnie Washington and Anna Srilda (Myers) Sledd and was a Benton High School Class of 1970 graduate. He later received his Master's Degree in Educational Counseling from Boston University while serving 20 years as a U.S. Army Military Police NCO. After his retirement from the military he was the director of the Drug Strike Force of Northern Kentucky for 3 years. John came to the Austintown area in 1995 and worked for the BWC as a fraud investigator, service office manager and compliance officer until he retired December 31, 2017. He was a member of St. Christine Parish, where he served as an usher and had volunteered with the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter #2 of Austintown. John enjoyed fishing and was an avid fan of the University of Kentucky Wildcats and the St. Louis Cardinals. He leaves his wife, the former Cornelia Schulz whom he married July 10, 1975; his children, Stephanie (Jim) Dilts-Anderson of Austintown, Mike (Makenzie) Sledd of O'Fallon, Missouri, Captain Sarah Sledd of San Antonio, Texas, Tana (Brien) West of Hardin, Kentucky; a sister, Judy (Larry) Hall of Owensboro, Kentucky; a sister-in-law, Michaela (Ralf) Klammer of Grafenwoehr, Germany; and seven grandchildren, Samantha, Allyson, Lillian, Elliette, Everleigh, McKenzie and Maci. Besides his parents, John was preceded in death by a brother, Gerald Sledd; a sister, Josephine Cox; his in-laws, Walter and Helga Schulz and a son-in-law, Jim Dilts. Friends may call on Friday at Lane Family Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel from 5:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter #2, 4496 Mahoning Ave. #280, Austintown, OH 44515 or to the memorial fund of St. Christine Church.
