John M. Simmons, age 60, of Greene Twp., Ohio, died Wednesday, August 13, 2008, of a sudden heat attack. He was born on March 21, 1948 in Warren, the son of the late Ermon K. Simmons and the late Lillian M. Simmons. John retired from Copperweld Steel in 1992 where he had worked as a steel roller for 23 years. Mr. Simmons enjoyed golfing and traveling with his wife Cheryl. He was an avid hunter and enjoyed fishing and spending time in the outdoors. John liked woodworking, particularly intarsia. John also enjoyed cooking and watching the Cleveland Indians and Browns. However, he may best be remembered as a man who enjoyed spending his time with his family and friends. He is survived by his wife Cheryl (Bates) Simmons, whom he married on December 2, 1978; two sons, Michael J. (Pamela) Simmons of Virginia and Christopher L. Simmons of Austinburg, OH.; two daughters, Marie S. Wright of Champion and Kimberly K. (Larry) Dunbar of California; two brothers, Paul (Barb) Simmons of Mecca Twp. and Larry (Victoria) Simmons of Greene Twp., and one sister, Victoria (Mark) Starkey of Greene Twp. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Joseph S. Wright, Angelia F. Simmons, Amber M. Simmons, Brian R. Dunbar and Mathew J. Dunbar. Arrangements are being handled by Shafer-Winans Funeral Chapel where the family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM Friday, August 15, 2008 and from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM Saturday, August 16, 2008. Funeral service will be at the funeral home at 11:00 AM Saturday with the Rev. James Melick officiating.
