Judge Fred H Bailey, Sr.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at Lockwood United Methodist Church for Judge Fred H. Bailey, Sr. of Boardman who died Sunday afternoon at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Youngstown. Judge Fred H. Bailey was born July 25, 1928 in Youngstown, a son of the late Fred Charles and Naomi (Funk) Bailey and was a lifelong area resident. He graduated from East High School in 1946 where he lettered in basketball and served as asistant football coach. Following high school, Fred served in the United States Marine Corps from 1946 until 1948, where he played for the Cherry Point Marine Basketball team. Upon return from the Marines, he worked his way through Youngstown College while working for Youngstown Sheet and Tube as a union shop steward. He received his Juris Doctorate degree from Youngstown College and started working with the Humane Society while having a private law practice at the Legal Arts Centre, downtown Youngstown. Fred was elected Mahoning County Judge in 1971 and served in Canfield, Austintown and Sebring for 28 years before retiring in 1999. He had received his Eagle Scout Award and Silver Beaver Award and was involved with scouting throughout his life. He served as chairman of the properties committee at Camp Stambaugh. Fred was a member of the Lockwood United Methodist Church, Youngstown Saxon Club, the ITAM Club, Youngstown Shrine Club and the Archeological Society of Ohio. Fred enjoyed annual fishing trips to Canada and was an avid hunter of arrowheads and archeological artifacts. Fred was a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather and will be dearly missed. His wife of 64 years, the former Ann Zappi whom he married August 23, 1952, died September 22, 2016. He leaves his son, Fred (Erin) Bailey, Jr. of Hudson; his daughter, Laurie (Ed) Metzinger of Canfield; two granddaughters, Chloe Klotz, Ashley (Russell) Varnadore; and two great-grandchildren, Sophie and Avery. Fred also leaves a sister, Margaret Whitacre of Lake Milton. Besides his parents and his wife, Fred was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Whitacre. Friends may call on Sunday at Lane Family Funeral Homes, 65 N. Broad Street, Canfield Chapel from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. and on Monday at Lockwood Methodist Church from 10:00 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. Family and friends may view this obituary and send condolences at www.lanefuneralhomes.com.
