Lorin J. Hopkins

Cortland - Lorin J. Hopkins, 89, passed away Wednesday December 27, 2018 at his home. Lorin was born on December 29, 1928 in Damascus, OH, a son of the late Alfred and Hazel (Jones) Hopkins. He was a 1946 graduate of Cortland High School and continued his education at Hiram College graduating in 1950 and at Kent State University graduating with his masters degree in 1955. He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1950 to 1952. He worked as a school teacher for 30 years until he retired at Lakeview Schools in 1982 and with the Bazetta Township Clerk for over 34 years. He was an active member and elder of Cortland Christian Church, O. E. A. Ohio Township Association, and American Legion. During his spare time, he enjoyed bowling, watching sports; especially The Ohio State University; and was passionate about golfing. Lorin will be deeply missed by his son, L. Thomas (Michelle) Hopkins; grandchildren, Stephanie, Corey, Andrew, Clayton, Karl; great-grandson Brennan; sisters, Eileen (Donn) Hazel, Jean (Walter) Armes, Erma (John) Flanagan, and Mary (Sekula) Valic; and brothers, Earl Hopkins, Dale (Karen) Hopkins, and David (Beryll) Hopkins. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 57 years Elva E. Hopkins, whom he married on May 10, 1952; his daughters Kim Stevens and Laurel Nicolaus; his sisters, Charlotte Phillips, Dorothea Heltzel, and Carol Roberts; his brother Glenn, Alfred, Murray. Family and friends may visit from 9-11:00AM at Cortland Christian Church located at 153 Grove Street in Cortland, with funeral services to follow at 11:00AM.
