Lucille I. Townsend Dixon Brown, 99 of Howland passed away Monday evening, June 17, 2013, at Community Skilled Health Care Centre in Warren following a lengthy illness. She was born March 2, 1914 in Middlefield, the daughter of the late John and Treva Lucille Hull (Davison) Townsend. Lucille was a graduate of Cortland School class of 1932. Lucille's cosmetology ccareer started in 1930 working in her parents' beauty and barber shop on Main Street in Cortland. At that time a license was not required to do hair. In 1934, she took over the business and renamed it Lucille's Hair Salon. With six beauticians and one barber, the shop was a hub of activity. In 1967, she sold the business, remarried, and moved to Pontiac, MI teaching at Murray's School of Cosmetology. Her career led her to teaching in the Inkster Public School System and to opening a new cosmetology program in 1973 in Medina, OH. In the summer of 1977, Lucille surprised the family when she announced she had been hired to open another cosmetology program at the new Gordon D. James Career Center in Lordstown. She retired in 1984 from the Lordstown School System and then started her second career substituting in Warren and Trumbull County Schools. Lucille especially loved her days at Trumbull Career and Technical Center, retiring at the age of 91 in 2005. Throughout her career she was continually updating, learning new styles and techniques. In 1985 much to the amazement of the family, Lucille traveled with Ken and Carla to the Middle East which included; riding a camel for the first time in her life, climbing up into the burial chamber in Cheops' Pyramid, touring the Valley of the Kings, entering King Tut's Tomb and riding a cable car to the top of the Masada. She received two special awards in her lifetime. In 2005 the TCTC Board of Education honored Lucille for her life accomplishments in education with a Golden Apple. In 2012 she was honored with a 75 year membership pin from Opal Chapter 181 Order of the Eastern Star of Cortland. A very active member, she joined in 1937 and served as Worthy Matron in 1945.
