Marion (Mary) Nykula Shook, 97, of Austintown Twp., passed away peacefully, Thursday, April 23, 2020 at Austinwoods Care Center. Mary was born March 8, 1923 in Youngstown, the daughter of Basil Nykula and Melania (Mollie) Djubinsky. She was a lifelong area resident and a graduate of Austintown Fitch High School class of 1941. Mary worked at Youngstown Steel Door as an aircraft fuel tank welder during WWII. She welded the fuel tanks used on her husband’s PV-1 aircraft flown by his VMF(N)-531 Marine Corps fighter squadron in the Pacific Islands. After the war Mary took on her most important role as a homemaker, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Mary loved playing cards, bird watching, sewing, leatherworking, and multiple needle crafts. Her husband, Lawrence A. Shook, whom she married July 28, 1942, passed away January 27, 2003. Mary leaves three daughters, Constance (Gary) Shook Philips, Norma (Robert) Shook Sacoman, and Beverly Shook (Bowmaster) Bretschneider, a daughter-in-law, Diane Shook as well as seven grandchildren, Derrick Philips, Wendy Philips Marczika, Kerrie Philips Flint, Dana Sacoman Cromwell, Robert Sacoman II, Dr. Christopher Bowmaster and Blake Bretschneider and nine great grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Helen Dieter. Besides her parents and her husband, Mary was preceded in death by a son, Dr. Richard Shook, a grandson, Ryan Bretschneider, a brother Michael Nykula, and step sister, Marie Tomlin. Mary will be laid to rest with her husband Lawrence at Arlington National Cemetery.
