Mary Gwendolyn Viets

CORTLAND- Mary Gwendolyn Cook Viets, age 93, died Tuesday, December 12, 2017 at Lake Vista of Cortland. She was born Sept 23, 1924 in Cortland, a daughter of Theodore M. and Mary L. (Barnes) Cook. She was a 1942 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School and Warren Business College. During World War II, Gwen was a secretary at Federal Machine Welding and worked for a real estate company in Mississippi. She was also the Office Manager for Viets Motor Company for many years before her retirement in 1992. She was a faithful member of Vienna United Methodist Church. Gwen enjoyed traveling, she has been to many places in both the United States and abroad. She was a member of the Travelers 51 Card Club and the Vienna Senior Citizens where she served as president in 1996. Gwens favorite place was her little log cabin on Long Point Lake in Canada. The cabin was located on an island, so Gwen was able to throw her fishing pole out in the water where ever she wanted to. Gwen will be forever remembered for the love and care she gave her family; her family was everything to her. Besides her parents, Gwen is preceded in death by her husband Robert L. Viets, whom she married August 30, 1943; her sister Dorothea Cook, sister-in-law and best friend Vera Hankey and Sister-in-law Ella Mildred (Viets) Burley . Gwen is survived by her daughter Janet (Kimber) Bettiker of Fowler, her son Roger (Anne) Viets of Fowler; five grandchildren, Dr. Robert L. (Dr. Robert Grundmeier) Bettiker, Traci (Tim Hill) Bettiker, Wendy (Col. Stuart) Killian, Ryan (Cindy) Viets, and Robert L. (Chris Hayes) Viets; 10 great-grandchildren, Jessica, Alex, Aaron, Adalyn, Samuel, William, Wayne, Katie, Owen, and Nathan. A celebration of Gwens life will be 12:00PM, Friday, December 22, 2017 at the Vienna United Methodist Church with Pastor Mary Prior as officiant. Friends may call one hour prior to the service.
