Mary Ann Melia, 95, of McDonald, passed away peacefully Wednesday morning, November 13th, at the Hospice House in Poland.
She was born February 18, 1929 in Youngstown, a daughter of the late Joseph and Assunta (DiGiacomo) DiStephano, and the youngest of five sisters.
Mary was a 1948 graduate of The Rayen School and worked as an aide for St. Elizabeth Hospital for several years.
She married her husband Richard on September 5, 1949, and they shared 75 years of marriage and many wonderful memories together. He survives her.
Mary lived in Youngstown with her husband until relocating to McDonald in 2005. She was a member of St. Dominic's Roman Catholic Church in Youngstown for 64 years. In her early years she volunteered in the cafeteria at St. Dominic's school. She also worked at the St. Columba parish house where she cooked and cleaned for the priest who resided there. For many years she worked for the Mahoning County Board of Elections as a poll worker. Mary enjoyed cooking and sharing time with her family, and she gave of herself generously to all those she loved.
After her husband retired they enjoyed traveling and took trips to Italy, Hawaii, Florida, the Carolinas, Las Vegas, Laughlin, NV, Atlantic City, and California, where she visited with her family frequently.
Besides her husband, Mary is survived by a daughter, Debra (Gene) McCalpin, of McDonald. She also leaves behind a granddaughter, Maria Carkido, and two great-grandchildren, Nevaeha and Gionni, and she will forever be a part of their lives. Mary also touched the lives of her step grandchildren Phil, Gary, and Vinny Carkido, along with Christine McCalpin, Renee Croley, and Jason McCalpin; a brother-in-law, Dominic Melia, of Poland, and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and four sisters, Jean Morbito, Virginia Tesone, Carmela Costello, and Josephine DiStephano.
In accordance with her wishes there will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, November 18th at St. Dominic's Church, 77 East Lucius Ave., Youngstown. Anyone wishing to attend services is asked to please proceed directly to the church.
Mary will be laid to rest in the Calvary Cemetery, Youngstown.
In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, Mary's favorite charity, in her memory.
