Maurice J. Brookes

CORTLAND- Maurice J. Brookes, age 96, died Friday, December 29, 2017 at the Shepherd of the Valley in Howland. Maurice was born March 6, 1921 in Cradley Heath, England to the late John and Annie (Treadwell) Brookes. Maurice and his family immigrated to the United States in 1930. Mr. Brookes was a graduate of Belle Vernon High School in Belle Vernon, Pennsylvania. He is also a Veteran of the US Army, serving as an Airplane Crew Chief. Maurice was a member of Cortland Christian Church. He was a member of VFW Post 7614 in Johnson, the Jerusalem Lodge #19 F&A.M., and the Scottish Rite. He is survived by his children Thomas Brookes of Cortland, and Linda (Marty) Futscher of Geismar, Louisiana, a grandson Thomas (Kristy) Futscher of Houston, Texas; six great-grandchildren, Caleb, Zoe, Hailey, Kennedy, Mason, and Reagan Futscher. Besides his parents, Maurice is preceded in death by his beloved wife of almost 70 years, the former Betty J. Beaumont, whom he married November 25, 1944, she died August 4, 2014. He is also preceded in death by a brother Thomas Funeral services will be held 1PM Wednesday, January 3, 2018 at the Lane Funeral Home, Shafer-Winans Chapel, 164 N. High St. in Cortland. Friends may call one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
