There will be a memorial service Tuesday at 11 AM at the Smith Corners United Methodist Church for Rev. Charles Kendig who passed away Friday morning at his home. Charles was born July 22, 1924 in Windber, PA a son of the late Floyd C. and Bertha (Penner) Kendig. Charles served in the Army Air Corps during WWII. He received his Baccalaureate Degree from Kent State University and a Masters Degree in Theology from the Boston University School of Theology. He was a member of the East Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church for 43 years and served the following churches. 1953 North Fairfield-New Haven United Methodist Church, 1954 McGuffey Memorial United Methodist Church, Youngstown, OH, 1957 Uniontown United Methodist Church, Uniontown, OH, 1963 Middlefield United Methodist Church, Middlefield, OH, 1966 Mt. Gilead United Methodist Church, Mt. Gilead, OH, 1969 Doylestown United Methodist Church, Doylestown, OH, 1977 Massillon Wesley United Methodist Church, Massillon, OH, 1981 Seven Hills United Methodist Church, Seven Hills, OH. Charles served as assistant Conference Treasurer for over 20 years, and retired July 1, 1987. He currently worshiped at Smith Corners United Methodist Church. Charles was a member of the Norton, OH Kiwanis Club, and served two years as President, a member of the East Ohio Conference and various clergy associations. In his spare time, Charles enjoyed carpentry, building the family home in PA. He is survived by his wife the former Patricia Foley, whom he married August 29, 1976, two children: Rev. Ardie (Rev. Daryl Higgins) Kendig of New Braunfels, TX and Debbie (Steve) Heida of Rome, GA; one brother Wilbur (Genevieve) Kendig of Windber, PA; and four grandchildren: Laura Heida of Rome, GA, Mary Heida of Rome, GA, David Kendig of Syracuse, NY and Lianna Kendig of Syracuse, NY. Besides his parents, Charles is preceded in death by his first wife Ardith, a son Donald M. Kendig; seven brothers: Harvey, Harry, George, Arthur, Robert, Fred and Walter Kendig and two sisters: Marion Kendig and an infant sister . Friends may call from 10 AM until 11 AM Tuesday at the Smith Corners United Methodist Church. Memorial contributions may be made to Smith Corners United Methodist Church or Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St. Boardman, OH 44515, in Charles' name. Arrangements have been entrusted to Lane Funeral Home Austintown Chapel.
