Richard R. Gregg, 90 of Boardman Township, died peacefully Monday afternoon February 12th at his residence. Richard, known as ‘Dick” was born March 24, 1933 in Hillsville, PA, a son of the late Louis Raymond and Christine Jennifer Macri Gregg. Dick grew up in Hillsville and graduated from Bessemer High School. He came to this area in 1957, and graduated from Youngstown University in 1963.
Dick was in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany from1953-1955. He worked for Republic Steel for 28 years, and was the Personnel Manager in their Ferndale MI plant for 13 years, then transferred back to Ohio. He later owned Best Binding Company in Streetsboro and had been an antiques dealer in Burton, OH, also doing furniture restoration.
Dick was a member of St. Michael Roman Catholic Parish.
He continued educating himself at Y.S.U. in art, archeology and forensics. He was a member of the Youngstown Archeological Society and the Croatian Club of Bessemer PA. During his time in Michigan, he was very involved with the Boy Scouts in Warren and volunteered for Habitat for Humanity. He was an avid history buff and was a member of the Mahoning Valley Civil War Round Table, and an advocate for the preservation of the artifacts and history of Native Americans. Dick was a Lifetime member of the Mahoning Sportsmans Association. An outdoor enthusiast, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and skiing.
Dick was very out going and will be dearly missed by his wife of 66 years, Carol Ann Medicus, whom he married September 14, 1957; three children, Roger Michael Gregg of Cork, Ireland, Susan Gregg Petty of San Anselmo, CA, Matthew John Gregg of Youngstown and two grandchildren, Louis Patrick Gregg and Fiadh Rua Gregg. Dick also leaves a brother-in-law, Donald Diana of Bessemer. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, George Francis, Louis and two sisters, Mary Gadzia and Sandy Diana.
There will be a memorial service on Tuesday, February 27th at 11:00 am at Lane Funeral Home, Canfield Chapel where friends may call from 10:00 am until the time of the service.
