Richard H. Baker, age 90, of Youngstown passed away Friday afternoon at Saint Elizabeth's Hospital, Boardman Campus. He was born July 21, 1921 in Youngstown, the son of the late Freeman & Kittie (Lockhart) Baker. He graduated from South High School in January 1940. After going to Youngstown College for two years, he served four years in the United States Army Air Corp during WWII, one year of which was in India working as an electronics technician. He returned to Youngstown College where he graduated with a B.S. Degree in Chemistry in August 1948. He was employed by United States Steel Corporation (Ohio Works) for 31 years in the Metallurgical-Chemical Department until it closed in 1980. He then worked for Reed Tool Company of Houston, Texas (now known as Schlumberger) until his retirement in 1991 Richard was a member of Austintown Community Church, the former China Burma-India Veterans Association, a delegate to the United Veterans Council, a member of the Mahoning Veterans Memorial Committee and a member of American Legion #301. He also belonged to the Austintown AARP Chapter 4339. Survivors include his wife, the former Doris J. Kibler, whom he married May 2, 1953; two daughters Gail (Ken) Baker Castle of Ypsilanti, Michigan, Susan Gessler of Austintown, a son Donald A. Baker of Linthicum Heights, Maryland; one sister Betty Opperman of Largo, Florida and a nephew Gary Aeh of Indian Rocks Beach Florida; two grandchildren Patrick and Brenna Gessler. Along with his parents he was also preceded in death by a brother William and a niece Marilyn Baker. Calling hours will be on Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Lane Funeral Home, Austintown Chapel, 5797 Mahoning Avenue where the American Legion will offer a memorial service at 6:30 p.m. followed by the Funeral Service.
