Robert Holmes Jr.

Warren Robert Holmes Jr., 94, passed away Friday evening, April 1, 2016 at home surrounded by his family. Robert was born on April, 24, 1921 in Warren, OH the son of the late Robert Holmes Sr. and Rebecca Ellen (Entsmiger) Holmes. He was a lifetime resident of Warren and a 1939 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School. After high school, Robert enlisted with the United States Marine Corps on August 5, 1942 and proudly served his country during WWII stationed in South Pacific. He received his Honorable Discharge on October 23, 1945. In his civilian life, he found employment at Republic Steel Corp in Warren for 33 years until he retired in 1984. He served four years as 4th Ward City Councilman, 6 years as Council-at-large, and eight years as President of council. He also served as Democratic Precinct Committeeman for 52 years, which was the longest in the county. He was a member of the VFW Post #1090. He enjoyed being outdoors and loved hunting, fishing, sailing, and gardening. Robert will be deeply missed by his loving children, Robert Holmes III of Warren, OH, Donna Jean (Ed Lanza) Holmes of Cortland, OH, and David Holmes of Lisbon, OH; and his grandson Robert B. Holmes. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Thelma Jeanne (Eddy) Holmes, whom me married on July 1, 1950 and shared 52 years of marriage with, and passed away on November 21, 2003; his son Allen Holmes; his sister Madeline Dietz; and beloved family dog, Buttercup. Funeral services for Robert will be held on Tuesday April 5, 2016 at 1:00PM at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Roberts Clark Chapel, located at 180 Garfield Drive Warren, OH 44483. Family will receive relatives and friends two hours prior to services at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Oakwood Cemetery in Warren, OH; where he will be laid to rest next to his wife.
