Robert James Cordell

Robert James Cordell, 84 of Bazetta Township, formerly of Howland, died Thursday morning, March 7, 2019, at Washington Square Nursing Home in Warren. He was born April 11, 1934 in Warren, the son of the late James Watson and Mildred Lucille Bennett Cordell. He was a lifetime Howland resident, being raised in the Bolindale area, moving to Bazetta in recent years. Bob was a 1952 graduate of Howland High School, where he was on the basketball, baseball and golf teams, and was part of the track relay team that went to the state championships. He served in the U.S. Army artillery as a sergeant from 1957-59 and in the Army reserves until 1963. He first worked for Bostwick Steel in Niles and retired from Amweld steel door in Niles after 25 years service. He then worked for and retired from Second National Bank, where he was a courier for 15 years. Bob had been a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Niles. He was an avid Cleveland Cavaliers and Indians fan. He was very particular about cleaning and maintaining his automobiles. He loved tinkering with and keeping in pristine condition his Wheelhorse lawn tractor. He is survived by his wife of over 61 years, Helen Rae Currie Cordell, whom he married September 13, 1957; one daughter, Robin R. (Jeff) Sommers of Burlington, Ontario, Canada; one son, James R. (LIsa) Cordell of Warren; four grandchildren, Owen, Haley and Sydney Sommers and Riley Cordell and one sister, Sue L. Strub of Howland. Besides by his parents, one sister, Mildred (Dick) Kerr and one brother, Kenneth (Armita) Cordell have preceded him in death. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 18, 2019 at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Roberts-Clark Chapel in Warren, where the family will greet friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday. Pastor John H. Griffith and Rev. Thomas Eiswierth will officiate. Burial will be at Pineview Memorial Park in Warren. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Childrens Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis,Tenn.38105-9959.
