Robert Wayne Durst, 93 of Champion Township died Tuesday morning, October 16, 2018, at O'Brien Memorial Nursing Home in Masury. He was born April 19, 1925 in Bazetta Township, the son of the late Elmer Wayne and Verna M. Wilds Durst. Bob was a 1943 graduate of Bazetta High School. He then served in the U.S. Army during World War II at the rank of PFC from 1943-45. Bob served in the European-African Middle Eastern Theatre and received the purple heart and bronze star medal for wounds he incurred in Lari, Italy in 1944. Bob received his bachelors degree in secondary education and his masters degree in education, both from Kent State University. He taught for 30 years in Warren City Schools, teaching woodshop at East Jr. High School and then drafting and engineering at Warren G. Harding High School, retiring in 1983. Bob was a 68 year member of Champion Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder for several terms, clerk of session, a trustee and a member of the Evangelism Explosion committee in the past. He was a member of the Cortland Masonic Lodge No. 529 F&AM. He was proud of being a master woodcarver and was also accomplished at building wood furniture and at finish carpentry. He was an avid golfer and loved golfing with his wife, Donna, and also enjoyed league golfing. His wife of 72 years, Donna Jean Irwin Durst, whom he married January 26, 1946 preceded him in death January 9, 2018. One son, Alan Robert Durst died in 2008 and three brothers, Harlan, Dan and John Durst have also preceded him in death. Bob is survived by one daughter, Darlene A. (Edward A.) Vasbinder of Warren Twp.; one son, Bruce C. (Paulette) Durst of Bazetta; five grandchildren, Eric (Amy) Vasbinder of Warren Twp., April (Nicholas) Goshe of Barrington, Ill., Adam (Elizabeth) Vasbinder of Warren Twp., Tiffany Lambert of Clarksburg, WVa. and Jesse (Amanda) Durst of Farmdale and nine great grandchildren, Chloe Lambert; Lillian, Tait and Sabrina Goshe; Kami, Luke and Ally Durst; and Wyatt and Blake Vasbinder. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 29, 2018 at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Shafer-Winans Chapel in Cortland, where the family will receive friends from 9:30 to the 11 a.m. service time on Monday. Pastor Steve Stelle will officiate. Burial will be at Champion Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Champion Presbyterian Church, 4997 Mahoning Ave. NW, Warren,OH 44483.
