Ronald Herbert Whitney

Ronald H. Whitney, 85 of Howland Township, died Thursday morning, February 28, 2019, at Shepherd of the Valley in Howland. He was born December 23, 1933 in Niles, the son of the late Herbert Benjamin and Evelyn Hazel Fredenburg Whitney. He had been a lifetime Trumbull county resident. Ron was a 1951 graduate of Niles McKinley High School. He then served in the U. S. Navy during the Korean War and was stationed in Italy, where he enjoyed playing basketball in his spare time. Ron retired in 1987 as a supervisor in the west thermal at Copperweld Steel after 30 years service. Ron enjoyed sports and was an avid fan of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Indians and the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers. He also enjoyed dancing. He was very proud of his three grandchildren and loved spending time with them, most especially at the ocean on the Virginia coast. His wife of many years and his high school sweetheart, Mary K. Naples Whitney preceded him in death December 15, 1992. One son, James R. Jones also preceded in death. Ron is survived by a daughter, Gina Lynn Walker of Chesapeake, VA; three grandchildren, Edward E. Walker II, Ericka Lauren Walker and Eron James Walker and one sister, Carol Whitney Marino of Howland. The family would like to thank the staff of Shepherd of the Valley in Howland for the compassionate and loving care shown to Ron. An informal service of remembrance will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 2, 2019 at Lane Family Funeral Homes, Niles Chapel at 415 Robbins Ave. in Niles, where the family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. service time. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Judes Childrens Cancer Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
