Roy Benford Maynard of 4430 Smith-Stewart Rd., Vienna, Ohio, died at 11:25 AM Wednesday (1-28-2009) in the Trumbull Memorial Hospital, Warren, Ohio, following an extended illness. He was 93. Mr. Maynard was born in Williamson, West Virginia on November 30, 1915, a son of Robert McCullum Maynard and Dessie Pearl (Dent) Maynard. Roy went on to serve our country in the U.S. Navy as an Electrician's Mate First Class during WWII. He was assigned to the USS Nevada, which sustained heavy damage while under attack by the Japanese at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, and later aboard the USS San Francisco and USS Scout. His decorations and citations include: the American Defense Medal, Asiatic Pacific Campaign, with 10 stars, Philippine Liberation Medal with 2 stars, American Area Campaign, Good Conduct Medal, the WWII Victory Medal, and 54 months sea duty. Mr. Maynard retired from Youngstown Sheet & Tube after 33 years as an Electrician. He attended the Vienna United Methodist Church; was a Member of the VFW Post #7987 Newport Ritchey, Florida; Vienna VFW Post #3521; 53 year Member of the Argus Lodge #545, Canfield, 32nd Degree Mason; and the Scottish Rite. In his spare time, he enjoyed gardening, reading, word puzzles, golfing, coin collecting, and watching sports on TV. Survivors include: his son, Charles Mark Maynard & his wife Charolette, Andover, OH; his step-son, Ronald D. Wilcox, Warren, OH; his step-daughters, Judith E. Akins, Brookfield, OH, and Carol A. Coffeen & her husband Pat, Franklin, TN; his half-sister, Ruth Beverage, Niles, OH; his half-brothers, Claude Charles Lockhart, Johnson, OH, and James Delmar Lockhart, Fowler, OH; his twelve grandchildren; and his ten great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; by his step-father, Burley G. Lockhart, Sr.; by his wife, Evelyn Marie (Gibson) Wilcox-Maynard, whom he married (11-24-1981), she died (9-27-2007); by his daughter, Cindy Dustman; by his sister, Gladys M. Kays; by his half-sister, Dorothy J. Bartek; and by his half-brother, Burley G. Lockhart, Jr. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday (2-2-2009) at the Lane Funeral Homes, Madasz Chapel, Brookfield, with Rev. Ruth Roth, Pastor. Calling hours will be Sunday from 3-6 PM & Monday from 10-11 AM. Burial will be in Crown Hill Burial Park, Vienna, with full military honors.
