Shirley M. Barbe-DiVencenzo

Bristolville – Shirley M. Barbe-DiVencenzo passed away Sunday morning, June 2, 2024 at Aultman Alliance Community Hospital.

Shirley was born on August 3, 1934 in Warren, OH, a daughter of the late Glen H. Sr. and Erva (Smeltzer) Deemer. She grew up in Bristolville, OH and enjoyed working in the family business “Deemers”.

After graduating from Bristol High School, she attended Trumbull Memorial School of Nursing graduating in 1955. She also received her bachelor’s from Heildberg College and continued her education at Kent State and Youngstown State University.

She married Harry W. DiVencenzo in 2000 and they had a wonderful life until his death in 2008.

Upon her completion of her formal education, she served 61 years in the Nursing profession; teaching RNs at TMH and STNAs at TCTC and several area nursing homes in Trumbull, Stark and Portage Counties. She served at St. Joseph’s Hospital as Developer of Outreach Health Programs. She also was a Staff Development Coordinator at many nursing homes. Her other love was being a school nurse at Harding High School and Southington Local for 9 ½ years.

She loved her God, her family, her friends, and nursing. She was a member of the Cortland United Methodist Church and past member of Bristolville United Methodist Church where she was very active and loved to serve as God’s partner. She was instrumental for securing grants for community after school programs and community outreach programs. She had a strong patriotic attitude, developing Christmas card service and other concerns for veterans.

Shirley leaves five children, Cindy L. Barbe of Greenville, SC, Jeffrey L. Barbe of Panama City Beach, FL, Sheri L. (Dan) Dawson of Conneaut, OH, Barry L. (Lori) Barbe of Prescott, AZ, and Todd L. (Glenda) of Cortland, OH; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four step-children, Leo (Rose) DiVencenzo of Lordstown, OH, David (Cora) DiVencenzo of Girard, OH, Anthony (Ruth) DiVencenzo of Girard, OH, and Judy Householder of Salem, OH.

Shirley will be joined in heaven by her parents, brothers, Glen Jr. and David Deemer; sisters, Arlene Pascarella and Donna Campbell; stepson, Harry D. DiVencenzo Jr., and granddaughter, Amanda Barbe.

Family and friends may visit from 6-8:00PM on Wednesday June 5, 2024 at Lane Family Funeral Homes Shafer-Winans Chapel, located at 164 N. High St in Cortland. Visitation will be held again from 11-12:00PM on Thursday June 6, 2024 at the funeral home, with the funeral service to follow at 12:00PM.

Burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Bristolville Township.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Cortland United Methodist Church or Bristolville United Methodist Church.
