TEDDY VESTAL, 88 BOARDMAN - Services will be held at 3:30 pm on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Westminster Presbyterian Church for Teddy Vestal, 88, who passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at Shepherd of the Valley, Poland. Ted was born on March 31, 1930, in Youngstown, the youngest son of the late Roy Vestal and Martha Belle (Evans) Vestal. Ted was a 1947 graduate of South High School, where he played basketball for Coach Al Beach. He attended Los Angeles City College, where he played both basketball and baseball, and was named Athlete of the Year in 1950. He graduated from Youngstown City College, where he also played tennis, with a Bachelors degree in Education. He earned a Masters degree in Education from Westminster College. Ted proudly served our country in the Army during the Korean War, stationed in the Far East. Ted was employed as a teacher and principal with Youngstown City Schools for 37 years. He received the Valley Forge Classroom Teacher Medal in 1958. Students and staff from Sheridan, Taft, Jackson, and John White have many wonderful memories of their time spent with him. Following his retirement, Ted was employed for an additional 8 years as the secular administrator at Akiva Academy. Ted also enjoyed announcing high school football and basketball for radio station WFAR in Farrell, PA for several years. Ted loved the game of baseball, which was in his blood from a very young age. He played pick up games at Fosterville Playground, was a player and manager in the local Class AA league, and was a player/coach with the Rondinelli Class B team. He was recruited and played for the farm team for the New York Giants. Ted then contributed his talents and his love of the game to his local youth, serving as a volunteer coach for Girls Softball and Boys Baseball in Boardman Little League and Boardman Community Baseball for over 10 years. In 1998, Ted was inducted into the Youngstown Old Timers Baseball Hall of Fame. Ted was a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, American Legion Post 565 of Boardman, MRTA, ORTA, and a lifetime member of NEA. He participated in the Teachers Bowling League, Senior Bowling League, and Boardman Baseball Breakfast Group. Along with his many accomplishments and contributions, Ted will be remembered fondly by so many for his sense of humor and his entertaining stories. Ted was preceded in death by his father, mother, brothers, Roy Vestal (Eileen), Robert Vestal (Miriam), and Tom Vestal (June), and his sister, Nancy (Vestal) McCracken (Wendell). He leaves behind to cherish his beloved memory, his wife of 58 years, Janet (Reese) Vestal, who he married on August 22, 1959. His memory will also be cherished by his beloved children David Vestal (Leah) of McDonald, PA and Melanie (Vestal) Olsen of Boardman, along with his adored grandchildren, Lindsay Kirkham-Olsen, Justin Olsen, Alyssa Olsen, and Katelyn Vestal, sister and brother in-laws, Linda and Chuck Spadafora, many nieces and nephews, and many close friends. Teds family wishes to extend their deepest appreciation to the staff at St. Elizabeths Boardman, Shepherd of the Valley Poland, and Hospice of the Valley for their compassionate care during the final week of Teds life. Friends may call on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at Westminster Presbyterian Church from 1:30-3:30 pm prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley, 5190 Market St., Boardman, OH.
