Thomas E. Urban, 81, of Warren, entered peacefully into eternal rest on Friday, January 26, 2024. He was born December 3, 1942, in Warren, the son of Edward T. and Sophie Urban.
He was a 1960 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School and received his BA degree in 1964 from Bowling Green State University. Tom served in the Army National Guard and started working for Republic Steel in 1966 in the Accounting department. When the opportunity was presented, Tom transferred to the growing Information Technology (IT) department. Initially he was a programmer, but as years progressed his duties and responsibilities grew. His titles included: Programmer/Analyst, Sr. Programmer/Analyst, Sr. Systems Analyst and Project Supervisor at the following companies: Republic Steel, LTV Steel, LTV Tubular, WCI Steel, and Computer Sciences Corporation. Most of his career was devoted to servicing financial applications for the Warren OH steel plant. His focus was attention to customer needs. He was well liked by both his customers and coworkers. He retired after 46 years of dedication to his work. Tom thoroughly enjoyed where he worked and everyone he worked with … but perhaps most importantly it was where he met his future Bride, Barbara Malys, whom he married on September 7, 1968. They enjoyed 55 years of wedded bliss.
Tom was a family man and very involved with coaching his daughter’s softball team and his son’s little league team. He attended many dance recitals. He also participated in Indian Princess with his daughter and Indian Guides with his son, programs through the YMCA. He was also a team leader with his son’s Cub Scouts. He was a selfless man always putting his family first.
Tom had a green thumb and whatever he touched grew. He took great pride in gardening, maintaining, and manicuring his yard. In 2000 he won the Neighborhood Pride award. He was one of Elvis Presley’s biggest fans. He also was a huge Pirates and Steeler’s fan. The first Cruise he ever went on with his family was a ‘Steelers Cruise’ where he met both past and present players.
Tom lived, worked, and played in the city of Warren his whole life, a town he loved. He and his wife enjoyed going to dinners with dear friends. They attended plays, concerts, and any entertainment happening in the Mahoning Valley. He enjoyed summer trips to Myrtle Beach but was always happy to return to ‘his town’ of Warren.
Tom was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish (St. James Church) and served on the Parish Council, the Choir, a money counter, and Catholic Men’s Fellowship.
Precious memories of Tom live on with his beloved wife, Barbara, a daughter, Julianne (Andrew) Bidinotto of North Richland Hills, TX and a son, Brian Urban of Niles. Preceding him in death are his loving parents, Edward and Sophie Urban, and grandchildren, Brittany, Giovanni, and Julissa.
He was a caring, kind, loving and gentle soul who will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Of all the special gifts in life, however great or small, to have had you for our husband and father was the greatest gift of all.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Tom’s memory can be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital online or at 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
