Virginia Hann, 96, former resident of Austintown Twp., passed away to eternal life Thursday, February 27, 2020 in Tucson AZ. Virginia was the daughter of Robert and Ruth Paugh. Her beloved husband of 68 years, Howard Hann, passed away in June 2017.
Virginia graduated from Austintown Fitch High School in 1941. Virginia studied at Youngstown College and then worked as a laboratory technician at US Steel. For the World War II effort, she shipped tools to the Army overseas from Lordstown Ordnance Depot. In 1946 she graduated with a BS degree in Home Economics from Ohio State University, Columbus OH. Virginia interned at the US Marine Hospital on Staten Island NY, supervised at Johns Hopkins in Boston MA, and worked at Fairview Park Hospital, Cleveland OH and St Elizabeth Hospital, Youngstown OH as a Registered Dietitian. From 1961 to her retirement in 1971, Virginia headed the Austintown Public Schools Lunch Program, designing the cafeteria for Fitch High School and supervising seven district schools. Virginia developed perpetual menus and recipes that continued to be used by Austintown Public Schools well after she retired. Summers and full time since 1971, she worked at St Elizabeth Hospital until retiring March 31, 1986, the same day her husband Howard retired.
At home, cooking balanced meals with Howard’s garden vegetables and pie, cake, or cookies for desert were prime focus. Her fried fish from summer fishing at Lake Erie (Port Clinton and Ashtabula OH) or winter fishing at Lake Pierce (Lake Wales FL) was delicious, and she painstakingly prepared rabbit and pheasant from Howard’s autumn hunting. Trips with family and friends to Arizona, Florida, Washington, Alaska, Hawaii, Ontario, Quebec, and Europe were enjoyed by all. Virginia was a member of Smith Corners United Methodist Church in Austintown. Virginia was an avid reader and enjoyed playing 500 Bid, Skip-Bo, dominos, and bingo.
Deeply missing their beloved mother are her three children, Donald (Paula) Hann, Gerald (Cindy) Hann, and Beverly Suffolk. Virginia leaves seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. She also leaves behind brother Robert (Karen) Paugh and sister Jean Hann. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to battenhope.org in support of family member Joseph Hann.
