Virginia Verner Gibbs

JOHNSTON- Virginia Gibbs, age 96, died at home of natural causes, September 28, 2018. She was born August 7, 1922. She was the daughter of Clarence and Bernice (Sinn) Archer. She lived most of her life in the Girard, Vienna and Johnson areas. Virginia was a 1940 graduate of Lordstown High School and a 25 year retiree of Kresge/K-Mart Corp. In 1941 she married Raymond E. Smith who was then killed in North Africa in 1943. She married Clayton Verner in 1945 and William Gibbs in 1982. She was preceded in death by her husbands, two of her brothers, Ralph and Charlie Archer, and a stepdaughter Charlene Miner. She is survived by her brother Paul (Berta) Archer of New Mexico; her children, Doug (Char) Verner of Girard, Diane (Ray) Smith of Johnston Twp, Lorie Carpenter of Belmont, NC and Lynda (Brad) Shaffer of Johnston Twp. where she made her home. She also leaves five grandchildren, Tim and Doug Smith, Scott Verner, Matthew Carpenter and Jana Carpenter Swift; she also leaves behind five great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. Virginia also leaves her Gibbs family, who were also very dear to her. Bill (Robbie) Gibbs of Hubbard, Ruth (John) Palmer, and Carolyn (Kevin) Riggleman of Niles, James Minor of Stow, Beverly (Richard) De Walk of Wind Gap, PA, Denise McCoy of Columbus, and Wendee (Patrick) Pennington of Texas. She also has 18 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. She leaves behind a total of 71 children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren. She is much loved and greatly missed. Friends may call 4-6PM Tuesday, October 2nd at the Lane Funeral Home, Shafer-Winans Chapel, 164 N. High St. in Cortland where Pastor Steve Maugh will begin the funeral service at 6pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley.
