William G. Dunleavy

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 AM on Tuesday, August 7, 2018, at St. Patrick Church in Youngstown, for William G. Dunleavy, 90, of Poland Township, who passed away Friday morning, August 3, 2018 in Oasis Care Center. William, commonly known as Bill, was born January 17, 1928 in Youngstown, the son of the late John and Gertrude (Meyers) Dunleavy. Bill was a graduate of East High School and was a proud member of the East High Golden Bears Basketball team. He was an Army Veteran of the Korean War where he served as a radio operator along the front lines. He retired from General Fireproofing after 43 years of service, retiring in 1991. He was a member of the Untied Steelworkers, Local 1117, where he was a shop foreman / steward and union rep. He served many years as treasurer for the union, and had ran for Vice President of the union. Bill was a member of St. Patrick Church where he was active in the Cursillo movement, a speaker for the churches retreat team, a member of the mens club, a lectern, active in the renovation of the church and a eucharistic minister to shut ins, along with his wife Jacqueline, for many dedicated years. Bill was also a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed camping and loved to travel with his wife across the country. He was a "Jack of all trades" and loved lending a helping hand to anyone in need. His wife, the former Jacqueline Smith, whom he married on March 10, 1951, passed away October 29, 2015. Bill leaves six children, Dennis (Nancy) Dunleavy of New Middletown, Robert Dunleavy of Poland, Jeanine (Dennis) Sharpe-Nye of Canfield, Kevin Dunleavy of Ft. Wayne, IN., Erin (John) Davis of Canfield and Dr. Sean (Pam) Dunleavy of Las Vegas, NV., one brother Dan (Katie) Dunleavy of Austintown, and 11 grandchildren, Matt, Rachel, Bridgette, Robert N., Jesse, Jaime, Jason, Nick, Adam, Mark and Holly, as well as 11 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wife, Bill was preceded in death by a son-in-law Donald Sharpe, one brother, Jack Dunleavy and two sisters, Betty Dailey and Peg Zawrotny. Friends may call from 4 to 7 PM Monday at the Lane Funeral Home, Canfield Chapel and again from 9:30 to 10:15 AM Tuesday at St. Patrick Church in Youngstown where the mass will begin at 10:30 AM. The family wishes to thank Shepherd of the Valley Assisted Living in Poland, Woodlands Assisted Living and the Oasis Nursing Home staff for all the wonderful, loving care given Bill and his family over the years.
