William J. McGuire, Jr.- There will be a Memorial Service at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, July 5 where friends may call from 9:30-10:30 a.m., prior to the Service at Bethel Lutheran Church in Boardman for William J. "Bill" McGuire Jr., 90, who passed peacefully on June 29 surrounded by his loving family. He was born November 17, 1926 in Youngstown, a son of William J. and Freda Weber-McGuire. He leaves his devoted wife of 58 years, the former Berta M. Gintaut of Poland. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Johanna Strupkus; a brother, Robert L. McGuire; sisters-in-law, Rosemarie McGuire, Helen Bendel and Frieda Schwederski; brothers-in-law, Gerhard Strupkus and Werner Schwederski; a niece, Karen McGuire-Cook, and a nephew, Werner Schwederski, Jr He leaves also his nieces Heidi (Glenn) Garwig of Boardman, Karin (Louis) DiNardo of Boardman, Inge (Michael) Farragher of Galveston, Texas, Elayne (Larry) Bozick of Lowellville, and his nephews Richard (Robin) Strupkus of Leander, Texas, Robert McGuire of Arlington, Virginia, David McGuire of Cotati, California, and Michael (Carolyn) McGuire of Twinsburg. Bill was a 1945 graduate of Youngstown East High School and attended Youngstown College for two years. He was employed at Ward Bakery and Truscon Steel prior to enlisting in the United States Army from which he was honorably discharged as a corporal in the Medical Corps in Korea. He retired from US Steel as a metallurgical turn foreman after 30 years of dedicated service. Bill was a member of the former Honterus Lutheran Church and became a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, where he served on several committees. Bill was a member of Western Star Masonic Lodge No. 21 F. & A M for 65 years and was a 60-year member of the Mahoning Valley Scottish Rite. He was a 65-year member of the Youngstown Maennerchor, having served in various capacities including pres., vice pres., trustee and most notably as financial secretary for over 25 years. Bill was awarded Honorary membership shortly after becoming a member because of his tireless and steadfast efforts on behalf of the club. He was an avid card player, especially adept at cribbage and pinochle, and was a founding member of the Mahoning Valley Cribbage Club. Bill enjoyed sports, particularly Notre Dame football and witnessing the Cavs' championship win. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Bethel Lutheran Church, 425 Crestview Dr. Yo., OH 44512 or to the Mickey Schuster Scholarship Fund, care of Bethel Lutheran Church.
